Hannah Tempest
About

Fifteen years watching how people and systems behave.

A Bristol-based design, experience and strategy leader - leading teams and practices as often as leading the work itself.

Portrait of Hannah Tempest

I've worked at director level across commercial, public and regulated organisations, connecting human behaviour, design, technology and commercial reality - usually in that order, because it's the order that works.

I've built and led multidisciplinary teams of 40+, directed multi-year transformation programmes, and set up the operating models, capability frameworks and mentoring routes that let design and strategy practice keep growing after a programme ends.

I don't only design products and services. I design the conditions, teams and systems that let good products keep being made - while staying close enough to the craft to still make and test things myself.

I spent the first part of my career being certain about things. I was good at it. It rarely helped. The second part has been about arriving with a better question instead of an answer, and sitting with a team inside the shape of the actual problem.

How I look at a problem

  • Human behaviour

What people actually do, not what they say they do.

  • Systems

Technology, design, business and commercial systems, and how they pull on each other.

  • Experimental tech

Making and testing things with emerging technology, through a UX lens.

Outside the work

Strategy and psychology are the day job and the hobby. Beyond that: yoga, nature and natural systems, emerging technology, and 1980s horror films - the last of which has taught me more about pacing, restraint and dread than most design books.
